Father Hurford's Visit to Sabah - 2015

18th Sep 2015 was a day of euphoria for St Paulians especially the senior classes. Father Hurford promised earlier, dropped by Sabah on his way to Australia. Prior to this, he had informed the Secretary that this round he would only be able to meet-up his former students of St Paul’s  in K.K., owing to his tight schedule.

He was a former teacher from 1963 to 1968 before appointed as the Principal taking over from Rev. Noel Chin in 1968. He served till 1970 before departing for England in 1971.

Father Hurford said he arrived Sabah in Sept 1963 just in time to see the last British Governor (Sir William Goode) renouncing his post at the K.K. Town Padang to return to England. 16th  Sept 1963 was the day Malaysia was formed.

He recalled, “During my seven years of service in Sabah (1963-1970), St Paul’s School grew from 300 students to about 720. Teachers were a problem and St Paul's depended a lot on the temporary teachers from the voluntary Service Organisation (VSO) and Peace Corps movements.”

His re-visit to Sabah gave his former students including our CM, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman a nostalgic mood.  A dinner, themed the “ 50th Anniversary Reunion Dinner” was hosted by our CM for him and his wife, Margaret accompanied by St Paulians at the Le Meridian Hotel on the 18th Sep 2015. He left for Perth on the following day.
